Walnuts anyone?

As you know, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the walnut harvest. That day has now come.

Today I’ve been and gathered the windfall. From just two trees, I collected some 250 nuts. And I can see more, high up in the branches, just waiting for the opportune moment to fall.

It’s taken me almost two hours to collect, wash and put them out to dry (beats doing my accounts).

And I hate to ruin surprises for anyone, but family and friends – you know what you’re getting for Christmas!

In other agricultural news…

Three of the avocado seeds have sprouted. Seven more to go before we can claim to have a forest! πŸ™‚

And apparently another seven years before they will bear us any fruit. Patience, it seems, is a virtue when it comes to growing stuffs.

Yesterday’s Countryfile covered walnut harvesting. They shook the trees with a mechanical device hooked up to a tractor, probably something you don’t have access toπŸ™‚ But you could still put down a cloth/tarp beneath and shake or whack the tree. They then washed and air dried for 24 hours before turning some of the nuts into an appetising walnut pesto. Good luck. Lyn x

Thanks Lyn! We’ve got a big load of walnuts now – they are currently drying out by the fire in our new place! Will look forward to sharing some with you at Christmas x
